Course Objectives
• Cognitive Objective (LEARN):
To inform and form the mind by tracing the historical development, theological significance, and stylistic evolution of Christian music across major eras of church history.
• Affective Objective (LOVE):
To transform the heart through reflection on how music has shaped the spiritual life of the church and continues to inspire worship and devotion.
• Volitional Objective (LIVE):
To perform a Christ-like life by applying the lessons of sacred music history in present-day ministry, worship leadership, and personal spiritual formation.

Module 1: Church Music in the Early Church Period (30–500 A.D.)
• Apostolic & Patristic worship practices
• Psalms, hymns, and chant traditions
• Church Fathers’ influence and theology of music
Module 2: Medieval and Renaissance Church Music (500–1600 A.D.)
• Gregorian chant, monasticism, and notation
• Rise of polyphony, motets, and sacred choral forms
• Reformation vs. Counter-Reformation musical reform
Module 3: Baroque and Classical Church Music (1600–1820 A.D.)
• Oratorios, cantatas, and sacred opera
• The influence of Enlightenment and rise of symphonic Masses
Module 4: Romantic and Global Church Music (1820–1900 A.D.)
• Sacred song cycles, nationalism, and emotional expression
• Influence of the organ, choral masterpieces, and dramatic oratorios
Module 5: Contemporary Worship and the Future of Church Music (1900–Present)
• Modernism, postmodernism, and the rise of Contemporary Worship Music (CWM)
• Global influences, technology, and theological reflection for today’s worship
